Default DBIS Reception Entry 2009

Just curious to hear of other parents with kids on the waiting list at DBIS this year.

Do you know where your child is on the list? Is your child already in Nursery at DBIS? Is it easier to get into DBIS now that Discovery College is open?

Thanks for sharing

My daughter is on the waitlist for nursery for September 09. We recently received a letter from the school telling us her place in the waitlist. Based on that number, she is assured to get in (per the school guidelines). Also, we have an older daughter attending DBIS, so she would be accepted with sibling priority in any case. Both girls were on the list since about 6 months old and both seemed to have made it in quite easily.

Not sure if DC has had any effect on the waitlist. I only personally know of 1 child who left DBIS to attend DC. The DBIS principal has been doing a good job of doing as much as he can to reduce the waitlist.

We're very happy with DBIS and will be staying there for all of their primary school. Not sure about high school, as ideally (for us) they'd both attend the school in Australia or the Australian School.

I have been told we are mid 30s on the list but I don't know if that is good or not...

35 on the nursery list is very good. Did you receive a recent letter of offer? They are offering places to the top 100 on the list.

35 on the reception list might take a while. The classes are full, so you have to wait until 35 children leave.

She is too old to go into nursery so we have to wait for reception places...

Hi everyone. My son is 4 and half years old and I'm searching a good primary school for him right now. Can anyone kindly tell me more infomation about DBIS. Is it a good school? As far as I know, there're a lot of changes in these 2 years, such as a new secondary school is being built and level & standard of each subjects were strenthened and improved. Is it true? Any comments are wellcome. Thank you so much!

Hi Happymum. Unless he has been on the waiting list (like, since birth) your DD has little chance of getting a place any time soon (as in a couple of years). Unless you want to buy a space for a non-refundable $350,000!

Other than that I have not heard a great deal of good or bad about the school. I know kids that go and it appears to simply be an international school in DB.

Because they are a non-selective school (they have no entry tests, proficiency etc and pride themselves on accepting 'everyone'. Obviously the do have to be somewhat selective in the number of special needs places they take in) their place on a league table (if one existed) would reflect this but they say that their students do well; and, as a school the Year 6 test (can't remember the name) ranks them in the top 5% of UK schools/education (this I can not clarify because I do not know or understand the UK system - just ask the school and they will reiterate).

Finally, they follow the Early Years Foundation curriculum which is a UK system and one the NSW (Australia) Kindy/Primary use, although that might change with the National Curriculum coming onboard soon.

Doubt any of this useful knowledge it will give my DD more of a chance of getting in -- will store it with the rest I guess!

Went to the parent meeting for nursery entry last night and had to update my previous thread with some factual information as my previous one was wrong. Please reread it to get a better idea of the school.

I have two girls at DBIS. One is in nursery and one in year 2 (she has been at DBIS since nursery). We love it and can give you our highest recommendations. I don't know if there are any 'bad' teachers, but we've had only wonderful ones. They all worked hard to meet the individual needs of our girls. I also think the principal is doing a great job. He is so interested in and concerned about the school. He has a clear plan for where they are headed and executes well.

If you are looking for a school that gives lots of homework/tests/pressure or immersion in Mandarin, this is not the school for you. If you want a school where they learn through play, are not pushed and the teachers are relaxed to let every child develop at their own pace, then this is what you want.
