My son is currently in K2 at Victoria Belcher Kindergarten. I know he doesn't get an automatic place at VSA, but what are his chances? Do you know what they are looking for when accepting students?

JoTs, Your son's chance depends on how many Victoria kids apply for the primary school, when we did it, it was 300 applicants out of 600 kids, and about 150 were accepted. However, I know of a few kids who got in from outside Victoria when they applied very late in the school year, and also of kids who are offered spot after they initially got rejected. Since you are in the Belcher's campus, what they are looking for, you and your son should already be familiar with, which is the emphasis of IB curriculum, they are looking for kids and parents who are interested in much more than the academics, they are looking for "well-rounded kids" (at least that was the impression that I got). They will basically interview the parents not so much the kids, and you will be asked questions like, What do you know about the IB program, what do you do for Holiday/weekends, why would you choose VSA for your child, What are you looking for in primary school etc., I think they are trying to see if your philosophy is in-line with theirs. They have a new primary principal this term, you might be familiar with her already as she use to be in charge of the kindergarten English curriculum, she has come in surprisingly strong and has been bringing lots of changes, and addresses things head-on. Hope this helps.

Thanks HKfornow... I am very happy with the IB philosophy at Belchers Victoria... so I guess I am hopeful he will get a place at VSA... I too have heard that even if they don't get an offer in June... then many places become available in November when the govt schools send their offers out. So I guess we just hang on in there! Are you happy with VSA now that your child goes there? And, Yes, I have met the new primary principal when she was at the Kindergartens... interesting info in any case. Aava... we are very happy with Belchers Victoria - but I guess it depends on what you want comparing with Woodlands. My husband is chinese and I am British and so my son is fluent in both English and Cantonese. So Victoria is perfect for him. Not sure I would send him there if he didn't speak Chinese... I love the IB programme and all the teachers (both English and Chinese) seem very nice and great teachers. It is run in a relatively "local" way, which I presume is very different to Woodlands. But my son loves going to school and I am amazed at how well he is doing in both languages. Hope that helps! Jo

Jo, yes we are happy with VSA (not to say it doesn't have it's idiosyncrasies), but most importantly, my son is very happy in school, and enjoys it tremendously. He frequently comes home and tells me his day was "excellent", so I have nothing to complain about.
