We are planning a possible move to HK, at this stage I would pick up a teaching job and DH wouldn't work. We have two children, 4 and 2. How much HKD would be need per month to survive? I am hoping kids school fees would be covered in a job offer and maybe some rent assistance. Just need to know if it is do-able on one wage. Helena

Personally I don't think its doable with only 1 of you working. HK is an expensive city. Here's a Cost of Living article http://www.geoexpat.com/881.html As a teacher you would probably earn anywhere from 30-60K/mth. Rent would be your biggest expense. I haven't heard of schools paying for preschool fees but they will for primary, which is from age 5.

i think HKIS and CDNIS covers reception fees if the parent is a teacher? $60K is going to be tight. there are always going to be little extras when it comes to schools, uniforms, field trips, pta fees ...and it all adds up! rent is another biggie! the article rani referenced is a good one.

Rent alone is going to kill off most of your income. We find water, gas and electricity to be cheap here (too cheap, really), but food to be horrendously expensive. And you can make water expensive by buying the bottled stuff. Have to factor in transportation costs, which might or might not be higher depending on what you are used to (big help, that one). And then entertainment costs, plus the aforementioned school costs. Not a cheap place to live.
